The Tang Institute is a center for teaching and learning that collaborates with Andover faculty and community/global partners to cultivate meaningful, transformative learning experiences that are rooted in equity and evidence. Project The Workshop The Workshop is an immersive, interdisciplinary program for spring-term seniors. Project 9 th -Grade Transitions Committee The 9th-grade transitions committee was formed to create a set of competencies across Andover’s 9th-grade curriculum. Project the ethi{CS} project The ethi{CS} project helps computer science and other technical educators incorporate ethical thinking meaningfully into their coding and other classroom projects. Project Feedback First Feedback First is an approach used in Andover’s math department that places more emphasis on the learning process than on grades—utilizing feedback, self-assessment, and reflection. Project Residential Curriculum for the All-Gender Dorm The goal of this project is to develop a residential curriculum for the All-Gender Dorm so that residents have the comfort and capacity to identify, discuss, and act on intersectional dynamics. The Tang Institute funds and supports Andover faculty fellowships. During this concentrated time, instructors explore and engage with central questions in education today. Tang Fellows Our work with Andover faculty is guided by the belief that teaching benefits from active collaboration, purposeful inquiry, innovation and experimentation, and thoughtful assessment. fellow María Martínez Instructor in Spanish Close Team Member Panel María Martínez Instructor in Spanish Dr. María Martínez, a passionate educator from Mexico, joined Phillips Academy in 2018 after teaching in various colleges across New England. With a vibrant teaching style and deep knowledge of Spanish and Latin American literatures and cultures, she swiftly became an integral part of our academic community. In the 2022-23 academic year, Martínez led the "Climate Breakfast Club" project, focusing on enhancing inclusivity in environmental education. Her belief that students thrive when actively engaged in syllabus creation underscores her commitment to student-centered education. Driven by this ethos, her contributions at Phillips Academy reflect a dedicated effort to foster an inclusive, collaborative, and engaging learning environment. email Projects Action Research The Interdisciplinary Museum Project: Bridging Spanish Language Acquisition and Visual Literacy Recent Articles Collaboration in Action: The Interdisciplinary Museum Project Team Convenes fellow Lionel Amanfu Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Close Team Member Panel Lionel Amanfu Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Lionel Amanfu has worked in the math department at Phillips Academy since 2014. In 2022, he began his Tang Fellowship, helping to advance the Feedback First project. email Projects Feedback First fellow Heidi Wall Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Close Team Member Panel Heidi Wall Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Heidi Wall began working at Phillips Academy in 2014, first as a instructor and then as the assistant department chair. In 2018, Wall became a Tang Fellow and launched her project, Promoting Mastery through Portfolio Assessment, which later became Andover’s Feedback First approach to teaching math. She loves all puzzles—jigsaw, crossword, tangrams, and anything that involves piecing things together (like math!).
